World of Networks
The success story of intelligent systems
Since human beings started to put their way of living together on a civilisatory basis, they have created networks: every era inevitably involves developing and linking up new spheres. As much as 2,000 years ago, the Romans had already developed a sophisticated system of water conduits. In the Middle Ages, it was the system of old caravan routes which we call the Silk Road. In the last century, civil aviation covered the airspace with a dense traffic network and thus made it accessible to millions of people. All over the world, scientists joined forces in the human genome project and exchanged information in order to decipher the complete construction manual of human beings. And finally, today, we are living in the age of telecommunications networks with which many new forms of communication are processed. As an international mesh of interlinked computer networks, the World Wide Web connects millions of users and gives them an opportunity to communicate with one another.
